Psalm 2

  • why do heathen rage
  • O kings be wise
  • rulers be warned
  • serve the lord with fear
  • first, pray for all men

Psalm Two perhaps is the most important prayer pattern in the book of Psalms. The Holy Spirit is teaching us how to pray for all people, so that we may have peaceful life. The only full prayer by the disciples recorded in the new testament was in Act chapter 4, (). They started with Psalm 2 word for word, “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?” They prayed for all nations and people first. They did exactly as the Scripture stated in (), It is important, for peaceful life depend on this.

To pray for all men is the first thing we should pray for, but that is not widely practiced nowadays. Maybe our language is limited, not sure of how to pray for all men. The problem is our prayers tend to “making sense” to human mind. For example, we may simply ask God to save all men, or bless all of them, but it will not be answered that way. Psalm 2 teach us God’s way to pray for all men, Why do nations rage and people imagine vain thing? Psalm 10:13 started with “why do” again; Why do the wicked condemn God? He has said in his heart, You will not judge. (MKJV) Instead of “why do” another phrase “how long” is in

Here is a language we don’t normally see in our prayers. This pattern can be used when praying for others, for we really don’t know why many things are happening in the world. Therefor, we can pray for others by starting with “why do” or “how long”. For what we have in mind may not be the best, or even good for others, only the Spirit knows what’s good. In this way we don’t try to tell God what to do, so that we don’t act like a master, not a servant.

God’s will declared on earth

As we pray Psalm 2, the word of God is being proclaimed to men on earth, particularly like verse 10, 11 and 12;

Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

How important are these words! just as First Timothy 2:2 said; we may lead a peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. Although we may not know what will happen to each individual around the world, but God knows. It is quite simple, we do what was written, so that God will bring the result. And that is always by far better than anything we can think of. The Lord’s prayer pointed to the same; Your will be done on earth is the key. And it’s done through His children’s obedience in praying Psalms as () commanded.

And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
O sons of men, how long will you turn My glory into shame? Will you love vanity and seek after a lie? Selah.(ESV)
