Jesus said; “Man should not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The bread made from flour feeds our physical body, but all Scriptures, the Psalms are the words coming from God, they feed our souls, our spiritual being.
A great part of Psalms are written mainly for our inner being not so much for the head to increase knowledge. It sometimes directly address the soul and the heart, like psalm 16:2; “O my soul , thou hast said unto Jehovah, Thou art my Lord: I have no good beyond thee.” Our soul need food to grow, otherwise it will starve to death. Men’s way of prayer is different, it’s often knowledge and thoughts from the head, or feelings and emotions, not so much of spirit and soul.
This is where we always neglect, psalm 42:5 is another example; “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance”. When we speak to our selves it actually allows the Spirit speaking to our souls with these words from God. It educate and build up our soul with the truth — to put hope in God. it will restore our soul just like the well know Psalm 23:3; he restores my soul. We don’t know what is the best thing to feed our soul, only the Spirit knows.
